TOURMALINE is a gem of several mixed colours. Its name even means “stone of mixed colours”, from the Singhalese expression. The ancient Egyptians had a myth, explaining the many colours of the tourmaline, where it is said that the stone travelled on the rainbow from the centre of the earth and collected all the colours on the way. Hence the nickname “Rainbow gemstone”. This gem comes in many different colours, not only mixed within one stone, but can have only one colour, such as red, green, blue and yellow.
Tourmalines are mined almost everywhere, but mainly in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Kenya, Madagascar, Afghanistan and USA, mainly from Maine and Utah.
