ONYX is a beautiful, deep black gemstone, sometimes with light streaks. This gem was very popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans, and its name comes from the Greek word “onux”, which means fingernail, coming from a myth about how Cupid cut the fingernails off from Venus while she was sleeping, and the clippings turned into precious stones, to ensure that her divinity would not be lost.
Onyx which is red and white is known as Sardonyx, and it was highly valued in ancient Rome.
