HEMATITE is a hard, black stone, and which ones get used in jewellery depends on how compact and tough they are. The ones you see in jewels are usually the hardest ones. The colour of this gemstone is sometimes described as blue-black, because of its very dark colour, and when this stone is crushed, it will produce a blood red colour. It shall not, however be confused with Bloodstone, which is a different gem, even though hematite sometimes is referred to as this (in Scandinavia and Germany), because of its blood red colour when crushed.
Hematite can be found in England, the Swiss Alps, Germany, Scandinavia and the USA.
