Cultured saltwater pearls are usually bigger and can be found in oceans and other places in the world with saltwater. Some of the more famous places are the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Burma in south-east Asia.
Tahiti pearl
In Tahiti in the South Sea is where you can find the beautiful, naturally grey/black pearls. In Australia they cultivate the white and the gold coloured "South Sea pearls". Other well-known places are near the Arabian Sea in the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and near Sri Lanka. Finally, there are the smaller Akoya pearls, traditionally associated with Japan, but they can be found in other parts of Asia. Saltwater pearls are perfectly round and often with a nice lustre. They are also, generally, much more expensive than freshwater pearls.
