CORAL is, like pearls, considered to be an organic gem, as it is grown in the depths of the ocean, nowadays collected by divers. Untreated, the red coral looks dull and matted. It is only when it has been polished, shaped and so on, that it achieves its beautiful, glossy surface. Coral can be found in the sea, at depths between three and three thousand metres, around Japan, Taiwan and the Red Sea, but also in Australia and the Canary Islands.
Coral is almost never shaped or cut like other gems.
